Spying on your neighbours? Social information affects timing of breeding and stress hormone levels in a colonial seabird

چکیده

A good overlap between offspring energetic requirements and availability of resources is required for successful reproduction. Accordingly, individuals from numerous species fine-tune their timing breeding by integrating cues that predict environmental conditions during the period. Besides acquiring information direct interaction with environment (personal information), can integrate observing behaviours or performance others (social information). The use social often beneficial because accumulated knowledge conspecifics may represent a source more reliable than intrinsically limited personal information. However, although constitutes major in wide range contexts, studies investigating its context are scarce. We investigated whether black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) used to adjust egg-laying. manipulated using food-supplementation experiment, known advance kittiwakes' reproductive phenology. expected food-supplemented unsupplemented pairs delay advance, respectively, laying when surrounded majority neighbours opposite food-treatment. both delayed egg-laying higher proportion This result shows time egg-laying, but it not match seasonal peak food availability. suggest give contradictory information, benefit delaying gather make better decisions about investment into eggs. Further, we explored potential proximate mechanism pattern report. show baseline corticosterone, mediate decisions, was lower females facing neighbours. Altogether, our results laying, complex decision-making processes which interplay.

Public information affects breeding dispersal in a colonial bird: kittiwakes cue on neighbours.

Habitat selection and dispersal behaviour are key processes in evolutionary ecology. Recent studies have suggested that individuals may use the reproductive performance of conspecifics as a source of public information on breeding patch quality for dispersal decisions, but experimental evidence is still limited for species breeding in aggregates, i.e. colonial species. We addressed this issue b...

Stress and the timing of breeding: glucocorticoid-luteinizing hormones relationships in an arctic seabird.

In birds, stressful environmental conditions delay the timing of breeding but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The stress hormone corticosterone appears to be a good candidate for mediating the decision to breed and when to start egg-laying, via a possible inhibition of luteinizing hormone (LH) and sex-steroids production. We used luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) cha...

on translation of politeness strategies in dialogues involving female characters in translations and retranslations of novels translated before and after the islamic revolution of iran and their effects on the image of women: a polysystem theory approach

abstract reception environment has considerable effects on accepting a translation. as the expectations of a target culture and its values and needs change throughout history, its criteria for accepting a translation or rejecting it will change accordingly (gentzler, 2001). the expectations of iran, as the reception environment in the present study, have changed after the islamic revolution. i...
